Moving from low fidelity prototypes we designed on Whimsical platform, we reached a consensus about the main functionalities that we need to include to align the learning goals.

According to “The Design Case: Rigorous Design Knowledge for Design Practice” written by Elizabeth, what happens in the moment of invention is called precedent. It means direct or vicarious experience of preexisting design and other configurations of materials or events in the world. She mentioned that browsing always enables the discovery of new, often unanticipated concepts. When it comes to our hi-fi design, we browsed several dashboard design on Dirbbble before jumping into the actual design work. We explored varied combinations of color them to target our design topic and also tried to settled down our design language. The precedent gives us a chance to view the new problem from a different perspective and inspires us to come up with better solutions. Through rapidly scanning and browsing different design cases, I, as an experienced designer, am able to integrate these inspirations with my existing schema and design strategies.

Here is our final design system:

We also fount a set of icons that have been used across the platform and these icons are filled for the purpose of consistence. Following the design system I created, we, as a team, can easily assign the prototyping work within the team but keep the design much more consistent. We started the homepage since it contains almost every element (buttons etc).

We applied light colors to the background and used the brighter color for the action button and highlighted components to emphasize the clickable parts. Since students will log in as a team, we want to show their team information and project overview at the very beginning. “Last time you left here” allows students to quickly access to the recent pieces. However, there are multiple types of files, we added icons to distinguish and also added saved time on the bottom of file.

By finishing the homepage design, team can have a feeling about the color theme and design trend. Then we can get a reference for the rest of the screens and got the work done efficiently.

For the instructor’s view, we designed an intuitive way to let instructor leave feedback and browse files that came from different teams. With the help of color and icon, it is easy for instructor to understand the functionalities of buttons. Also, the toast on the bottom of the page is also designed to remind instructor about how to make comments.
