The power of a design or art critique is minimized or overlooked. Along with other side effect a severely negative critique can make or break an individual’s ability to take criticism in the future

In my undergrad years, a student in a critique commented on classmates work the “colors reminded her of a tampon box”. Perhaps better way to critique that students’ work would to be say I find your work to be far too feminine. Changing the words but having the same general meaning.

Jeff Koons “Lips” 2000

I was at an Ivy League University critique of a 1st year MFA students. One of the guest critics stated that one of the students paintings were like the “retarded younger Sister of the retarded younger sister of Jeff Koon‘s”. The power of those words must have had of left a lasting impact on that student. Those words probably run through her mind every time she sits back to review her work.

Knowing the difference between the right words and the wrong words can make all the difference. They can propel a student and powering them to become better designers or break their spirit. Both professors and fellow students should be taught of the power of critiques.
