Designers feel that they do not need to learn to program or learn developing tools and languages. I agree with the designers who want to work on just the design stage of a project but if you want to be an all rounding UX Designer, an understanding of programming languages is essential at the very least. It does not mean that you have to master HTML or CSS or Javascript. Just the basics of these programming languages would do.

Designers have so many tools to create their visual designs like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch and dozens of other softwares. Just like designers have so many tools, there are an equal number of programming languages that are either front-end development or back-end development. These languages help create the backbone of all digital systems that the visual designs rely on most of the time.

Here are some programming languages that go hand in hand with UX Design:

  1. HTML5 (Hypertext Markup Language)
  2. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
  3. JS (JavaScript)
  4. SQL (Structured Query Language)
  5. DBMS (Database Management System)

With a basic foundation in these programming languages, you can dominate the UX industry with the knowledge on your hands. If you are wondering why a Designer should take up coding, here are some thoughts that might help you understand why it’s important.

Learning to code can help advance your critical thinking, problem solving ability, creativity, math and collaboration. Furthermore, when applying for a job nowadays as a UX Designer, most companies look for proficiency in HTML, CSS and Javascript and sometimes they are the minimum qualifications. By equipping yourself with a solid foundation in coding, you’ll be ready to bring your design expertise into your dream job in the UX field.

There are many websites where you can find tutorials or literature where you can get a grasp of these languages. Do not stress because it is not an overnight process of learning to code. It is a skill that is developed over time, pun intended. So take a look at these websites that can help get you on your way to becoming an all rounder UX Designer.

  1. Code Academy
  2. Khan Academy
  3. Code Avengers
  4. Code School
  5. W3 Schools

Happy Programming to all the UX Designers!!!
