No one tells you these things @ work!

A lot of us assume that if we do our jobs well, we deserve to get a good appraisal, increment and that promotion. We are in awe of those who get promoted faster than the company guidelines. We aspire to be them. Yet we do not know what it takes.

A few things I learnt in my career that helped me.

Align yourself to your bosses goal

The first thing to do is to align yourself to the bosses goal. Make it yours. If you have a different aspiration, it is probably wise to let the boss know it and steer your career towards that.

Solve his problems

Every boss has problems. Find out what they are. Find ways to solve it. At the least, do not BE the problem. Solving the bosses problem at work, automatically brings you into their radar. They now see you as a problem solver.

Make a hero of him

Every boss wants to look good with their boss. Make a hero of him. Make him look good with his boss or his peers. Be the reason of his pride. While it is his job to protect you from office politics of other departments, it is yours to make him look good in his circle.

Build a network he does not have access to

If you can get something done, he cannot, you have a value. You are the blue eyed employee. Creating that network is critical to your success. Be the hustler.

No one talks about these in the official environment. However, these will certainly help you to be recognized as a value add. Your work has to be top class anyway.
