Honoring the Mukkamala’s Legacy of Giving

The Piper Family Philanthropy Award recognizes a legacy of extraordinary service, commitment and generosity in furthering the mission of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. The award is given periodically in honor and memory of Piper family members who are advocates for building a strong community by engaging people in philanthropy and growing the community’s permanent endowment. Inspired by the heritage of generosity bestowed from generation to generation, the Mukkamala family received the third Piper Family Philanthropy Award in 2018.

For Bobby and Nita Mukkamala, and their sons Deven and Nikhil, Flint, Michigan is not only their home. It’s their place. The place where they live, work, attend school and engage with the community. Their roots are here, and their branches have sprouted growth and prosperity for many.

Bobby and Nita have a long history of engagement with the Community Foundation. Bobby served on the Board of Trustees from 2005–2016, serving as chair for three years. He is currently a board member for two of the Foundation’s supporting organizations — Flint Kids Learn and the Foundation for Flint. Nita served on the
Flint Women and Girls Fund Advisory Committee from 2009–2017, and is currently serving on the CFGF Board of Trustees and the Tuuri Health Committee. Sons Deven and Nikhil served as youth grantmakers on the Countywide Youth Initiative Program Committee from 2013–2014.

In 2011, the couple established the Bobby and Nita Mukkamala Fund, an endowed fund that supports the mission of CFGF.

“We serve the community by creating the future we want for ourselves,” said Dr. Bobby. “We want a vibrant, attractive city for people to live and work. And we are grateful to our mentors in the Flint community — a long list of philanthropists and community workers who showed us the power of the individual to make a difference.”
