De terugkeerling
Kijk ze daar hun levens leiden, verscholen achter vergeelde gordijnen. De hele fucking dag de tijd om het huishouden te doen, maar te beroerd om die dingen een keer door een sopje te halen. Nee, hoor, die wijven zitten verdomme liever de hele dag op hun almaar uitdijende reten zoete thee te drinken, en te kauwen op incestueuze buurtroddels. Wát een genot als Fatima van drie deuren verder zich heeft laten bezwangeren voor het huwelijk — zeker als een Hollander de dader is. Ze knijpen de met henna ondergeklodderde diabeteshanden in elkaar als Hafid, de derde zoon van de achterbuurvrouw, het met mannen blijkt te doen. En hoe heerlijk als Abdellah van een etage lager een dief of een junkie blijkt te zijn.
Natúúrlijk, ze spreken er schande van. Hasjoema, zeggen ze, maar zoeter genot kennen ze niet: dat de ander het slechter heeft dan zij, dat er over de ander slechter gesproken wordt dan over hen, over hun gezin. Want de mannen zijn geen haar beter, natuurlijk niet. Het heet hier verdomme de Livingstonelaan maar denk niet dat in die betonblokken waar hij nu al uren naar zit te staren ook maar iemand naar buiten kijkt, dat er iemand nieuwsgierig is naar wat zich dáár afspeelt, iets wil ontdekken. Nee, de blik is naar binnen gericht. Duizenden kilometers gereisd, om in een portiekflat in Utrecht de schotel op Marokko of Turkije te richten, en een comateus leven te leiden achter gore gordijnen die gesloten blijven om de buitenwereld — de plek waar je deel van uit zo kunnen maken — buiten te sluiten.
De AIVD’er kijkt op de klok van zijn zwarte Golfje. Zestien minuten verstreken alweer, nog drie uur te gaan voor hij straks deze godvergeten wijk kan verlaten. Voor vandaag, in ieder geval.
Toen hij vanochtend Kanaleneiland in reed (hij kon het niet laten eerst even langs de Europalaan te gaan, noem het een sentimental detour) verwachtte hij dat het hem iets zou doen om voor het eerst weer terug te zijn na al die jaren, maar de rest van de dag zit hij vooral op de klok van zijn Golfje te kijken — niet echt handig als je betaald wordt om een ‘staatsgevaarlijk subject’ te observeren, dat snapt hij zelf ook wel.
Hij verliet zelfs even zijn post, tegen alle regels in, maar fuck it: beseffen ze daar in Zoetermeer wel hoe afstompend het is om een werkdag lang naar een met schotels volgehangen betonblok te kijken?
Eindelijk gebeurt er wat. Enkele tientallen meters voor hem ziet hij Danny Ghosen van PowNews met zijn roze microfoon achter een politieman op een damesfiets aanrennen. De slungelachtige cameraman kan de verslaggever maar met moeite bijhouden.
Hij mag ’m wel, dat lefgosertje. Echt een tv-kijker is hij niet, hij leest liever, maar als hij te dronken is om zijn aandacht bij zijn boek te houden — en dat is, eerlijk is eerlijk, tegenwoordig steeds vaker het geval — zet ’ie soms de televisie even aan. Hij moet vaak lachen om de items die dat gastje maakt, en lacht nu ook als hij ziet hoe de verslaggever achterop de fiets van de politieman springt.
Toen PowNed een paar jaar geleden het omroepstelsel binnendrong had de Dienst het nodig gevonden een screening van de belangrijkste medewerkers te doen. Werd Johan in de maag gesplitst, dat klusje. Maar meer dan wat promiscue escapades met gewillige redactiemeisjes en wat latent alcoholisme bij verschillende medewerkers, vond hij niet.
‘Cliché, hoor. Behoorlijk burgerlijk clubje, in feite,’ zei Johan toen hij in de kroeg vertelde over zijn screening van de roze omroep.
De politieman met achterop de PowNews-verslaggever slaat een hoek om, waarbij Ghosen een poging doet om de agent de roze microfoon onder zijn mond te duwen. Het ziet er wankel uit, maar het lijkt erop dat ze net niet omlazeren.
Dat hij nu hier in Kanaleneiland zit, dankzij Van Gierst. Tijdens zijn onreglementair uitje, een uur of drie geleden, reed hij weer langs de Europalaan. Nog steeds niets te doen natuurlijk op dit uur van de dag, er werd daar pas echt gewerkt (gepeesd, dat was het woord) als de bouwmarkten, meubelwinkels en kantoren in de omringende wijk sloten, en overal in het land mannen met kinderzitjes in hun auto’s naar huis belden om te melden dat ze iets later zijn vanavond, ja, het is druk op de zaak, schat.
Hij parkeerde zijn auto voor een bakstenen kolos die er in zijn jaren niet stond. Vroegzware jongens met halflang, vettig achterovergekamd haar en blonde meisjes met lovehandles boven hun vale spijkerbroeken gingen het gebouw in, en er kwamen weer andere vroegzware jongens met vettig halflang achterovergekamd haar en blonde meisjes met lovehandles boven hun vale spijkerbroeken het gebouw uit; ergens in Nederland moest er een 3D-printer staan die identieke studenten uitpoepte. De monotonie werd slechts doorbroken door een enkele jongen met een Pellè-kapsel, door een enkel meisje met felgekleurde Nike Airs onder haar skinny jeans.
‘MAX’ stond er in grote letters op de kolos, die blijkbaar studenten huisvest. Een studentencomplex in Kanaleneiland: wie had dat ooit gedacht? De fucking wonderen zijn de wereld nog niet uit.
Hij rookte er vier sigaretten voor hij terug reed naar de Livingstonelaan met nog eens uren wachten in het vooruitzicht.
Die werkdagen van hem voelen soms als een pornofilm zonder cumshot. Hij kan net zo goed in zijn nest gaan liggen, net als die radicalo die hij van Zoetermeer in de gaten moet houden; want ongetwijfeld ligt die gast op dit moment gewoon met een martelaarsglimlachje op zijn bebaarde bek te dromen over de dag dat hij 72 cherries kan poppen.
De hele dag laat hij zijn smoel al niet zien. Nou ja, wat de AIVD’er betreft blijft dat nog even zo, want in vermoeiend achtervolgingsgedoe heeft hij vandaag al helemaal geen zin. Hij is al zo moe.
Zijn iPhone zoemt. ‘Dennis van Gierst’ ziet hij op zijn schermpje. Hij laat zijn telefoon zolang mogelijk overgaan, voor hij eindelijk opneemt.
‘Dennis,’ zegt hij.
Zoals hij het uitspreekt klinkt het als een scheldwoord, iets als ‘klootzak’ –tenminste: dat hoopt hij.
‘Yo, Mohammed,’ antwoordt de man die hem deze kutklus in z’n maag splitste.
De AIVD’er haat het als hij Mohammed wordt genoemd. Waarschijnlijk weet Dennis dat ook, eigenlijk weet hij het wel zeker, hij doet niets liever dan zout in rauwe wonden strooien, zijn ondergeschikten stompzinnig treiteren om ze te laten merken dat ze ondergeschikt zijn aan hem, Dennis van Gierst, de dwaas die het schopte tot chef.
‘Best grappig eigenlijk,’ zei hij onlangs nog, ‘een afvallige Marokkaan die Mohammed heet.’
Hij had gezwegen. Het was zinloos om Dennis voor de zoveelste keer te zeggen dat niemand hem nog Mohammed noemde. Al zoveel fucking jaar niet meer.
‘Nou, Mohammed, praat me bij. Is meneer nog gaan wandelen vandaag?’
Waarom kan die gast niet één keer gewoon een vraag stellen, zonder te klinken als een zwakzinnige?
‘Nee. Niets gezien. De hele dag niet.’
‘Verbaast me niets. Het is een luie flikker. Maar wel een gevaarlijke luie flikker, dus blijf tot het afgesproken tijdstip op je post. Daarna neemt Johan het van je over. Zorg dat jullie elkaar even aftikken. Maar goed, dat hoef ik jou na al die jaren natuurlijk niet te vertellen. Spreek je morgen, Mo-’.
Na de eerste lettergreep van zijn naam drukt de AIVD’er de stem van zijn leidinggevende weg.
Typisch Van Gierst, zo’n opmerking over dat aftikken. Hij weet dat jij het weet, probeert je nog een soort van lousy compliment te geven door te zeggen dat hij jou ‘na al die jaren’ natuurlijk niets hoeft te vertellen — maar ondertussen zegt hij het allemaal toch: om jou het gevoel te geven dat je niets bent, dat je in zijn ogen minderwaardig voetvolk bent in de (het zijn zijn Grote Woorden) Strijd tegen Terrorisme. Wat misschien zo is, dát is niet het probleem, het is geen schande voetvolk te zijn, het probleem is dat toontje van die lul.
Hij kijkt op de klok van zijn auto, ziet dat hij nog ruim twee uur te gaan heeft, en draait het contact om.
‘Mohammed in een zwart Golfje: een betere vermomming is niet denkbaar,’ zegt Dennis zo ongeveer elke vergadering. En elke keer voelt die lul wéér de noodzaak de niet-grappige grap uitgebreid uit te kauwen.
‘Want elke Marokkaan van zijn leeftijd rijdt in een zwart Golfje! En elke Marokkaan zit de hele dag te niksen in zijn auto! Hij valt dus niet op!’
