Hello, I am Jess your Activities Officer. I thought I would write a blog on one of the favourite parts of my job: supporting the formation of brand new societies here at Leeds University Union. Last week myself and the wonderful Activities Exec met to discuss and vote on the last round of society formations and I am so happy to say that five wonderful societies got approved.

  1. OnBeat Society

OnBeat is an online magazine dedicated to provide a platform for BME women to be recognised, listened to and acknowledged. Their formation event was filled with spoken word and insightful discussions. There was an open dialogue on the topic of race relations within the community, a dialogue which is crucial with the current political climate. I just want to thank the committee for all of their hard work in creating the OnBeat community and I can’t wait to see what great things they achieve in the future.

2. Mantality Society

Mantality Society aim to raise awareness and provide an environment to talk about male mental health on campus. Mantality will provide intrinsic motivation and stress management techniques to every member of the society that they can use in their everyday lives and provide weekly male circles. Their formation event was a great introduction to the society and it was great to hear the impressive Stevie Ward speak and support the group. Stevie Ward is a professional Leeds Rhinos player and founder of Mantality Magazine in which the society plan to establish strong links with. It has been an absolute pleasure to see this society form. I have to say a massive thank you to the committee for making this happen, specifically Andrew Marks who has shown utter dedication and has been a driving force in making this happen.

3. Performing Arts Society (PAS)

Performing Arts Society are a non-auditioned performing arts society welcoming all levels of experience. Starting from next academic year PAS initially aim to run workshops once a week where you can try out singing, dancing and acting for anyone who just wants to do a bit of performing without the commitment to rehearsals. PAS ran a successful and welcoming formation event and received positive feedback. I wish PAS all the luck in the future and might pop along if you decide to do a Billy Elliot number.

4. Big Open Party Society (BOP Soc)

This society aims to celebrate a variety of cultures and make minority issues more widely understood. This society will be an inter-sectional and inclusive environment which simultaneously celebrates and raises awareness about the different aspects of life of BAME students. The society aims to be a support network and provide a space for friendships to be built. I want to congratulate this society on their successful formation event which gave a great insight into the society whilst showcasing dance, music and poetry. This event created a network for meeting new people who share similar interests and the feedback was amazing.

5. Physician Associate Society

The Physician Associate Society will allow representation of physician associates across the university. The course is a two year MSc in medicine with approximately 60 students across the two years. The course has only been established in Leeds for the past 3 years. The society plans to run mock OSCE stations for first years, social events and integrated revision sessions. Best of luck for the future!

I just want to say thank you to the students who have come to LUU with your great ideas and it has been a pleasure to see all of the hard work and passion you have put in to create your official societies this year. We have had over 20 new societies this year and I wish you all the best of luck. If anyone has an idea for a new society please come and chat to us. Find out more here!
