Belonging at Leeds

My Leeds Story began 5 years ago, back in 2013 as a fresh faced 18 year old coming up the M62 from the Wirral to study Medicine.

On your first couple of days, you may feel a bit nervous and that’s absolutely fine. Whether you’re in halls or a shared house, everyone is in a new place feeling just as nervous as you. Grab some cake or snacks you can share with people, get people’s names and try to relax and chat. You may gel completely straight away but don’t worry if it takes a bit longer, there is plenty of time to get to know people — many of my closest friends I met weeks & months later, so you can take your time!

Before coming up to Leeds, I had tried to try and see what societies I could join and try out. Whilst at school, I loved being involved with music and theatre, so I tried to look out for any societies which fitted the bill!

During my first year, Saturdays or Sundays at Old Bar became quite a fixture as somewhere my flatmate and I could go to watch Liverpool (nearly) win the title — emotions were up and down during that season as they got so close but fell (slipped, if you know, you know) at the last hurdle.

When you start out, everything can seem a little bit daunting, but a good place to start is having a look at what Give it a Gos (GIAG — pronounced jee-ags(?!)) are running or have a look at your academic society to meet people on your course. They are a great chance to try out something new, meet new people or just keep something going you did before university. I found my home in a number of societies — Backstage, Music Theatre, Music Impact in the Community and LAMMPS (Medics Musical Society).

Societies have been the rock where I’ve met most of my friends (and “family”!), some of whom I’ve now lived with for 6 years! For me, they have been the best place to have fun, meet friends and have the best time.

Here in Leeds & LUU, there is something for everyone and its exciting you’re getting to start this journey. Remember, “belonging” is different for everyone, so your story may be completely different to mine or your next door neighbours. Have the best of times, good luck and remember we are always here to help at your Union!
