As some of you may know already, LUU’s new Co-op is open today, bringing a better shop to you, but also bringing in a partner who shares similar values to ours.

For a number of years, you’ve been telling us that your Essentials shop wasn’t quite up to scratch, whether that be the aged shop or the small range of items that were on sale. We also realised that it was the only part of the building which hadn’t really been touched since we upgraded the rest of the building.

As a result of both your comments and the retail market becoming more difficult to run a shop in, we explored all the different options of how we should run your shop. In our view, one of the most important factors in our decision making was making sure that whoever we worked with shared our values and how they make a positive impact on you, Leeds and the world.

In Co-op, we believe we’ve found the right people to work with. Not only are they working with us to open the first student-run university campus Co-op in the country, they share our view on “doing the right thing”.

LUU and Co-op both share the same membership, democratic principles, making sure members are at the heart of decision making in what they should do. By working together, students will now be able to have a positive impact on Co-op and make a difference across all their stores, as well as working together to make a difference in the community.

Both LUU and Co-op work for their members and communities in the same way, everything we both make goes straight back to improving the lives of others — For LUU that means making sure you love your time at Leeds, for Co-op that means making sure everything they do supports communities, both locally and around the world.

Together, we can work together to make both of those visions and our work even better!
