Welcome to Black History Month 2019, we’re already a week in and there is plenty more to come that you can get involved with this month. There’s a calendar full of events that will allow you to have a full sensory experience. Whether you grab a bite to eat from Delice D’Ivoire or Fifi’s Caribbean Twist at the Farmers’ Market, sit back and enjoy the African Caribbean Society’s annual showcase, Legacy or even join me for a hands-on hair care workshop. There is something for everyone.

It is my goal to make sure that Black people on campus all feel seen and celebrated so the theme for this year is “Black &”. It’s up to you to choose what that means for you, the story you’d like to tell and how you’d like to tell it. For me that means honouring my identity at the Decolonising Gender and Sexuality Give & Take Event on 9th October. There was a time when I didn’t know such spaces existed or that there were others whose blackness intersected with their sexuality in the same way as mine. So, events like these are always something that I look forward to.

I would also like to add that it’s an opportunity to learn and grow too. So, most events are open to all races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds but Black experiences and Black people will be centred so, please be mindful of the space you take up. However you choose to celebrate, and however you complete your “Black &”, you’re welcome to share your experiences on our Instagram story or even write a blog post. I look forward to seeing you around and hearing your stories.
