Democracy is not working the way Americans think it should

Politics is not everyone’s cup of tea: citizenship doesn’t seem to carry the same value it has in the past. Americans watch as the nation slips into the abyss, but fail to recognize the power they have to change it through the ballot box, through their votes. The 21st century has been plagued with American strife: from politicians trying to overthrow the standing government to the daily ritual of gun violence, with just a splash of pandemic tossed in for good measure. Americans have grown weary of government. Americans are tired of bad government: we are simply tired of business as usual.

Today, I posit a solution that will find less traction than a bald tire on an ice-covered highway. But it must be said, it must be offered, for it may be the only viable solution left to save the democracy in our midst.

The Electoral College, for what it’s worth, is a system created by the Founders of this government to choose our national leader — our President. I won’t go into details here about how or why it was set up: that is no longer relevant. We do not live in the 18th century, but in the 21st, and must modify our government to meet the needs of our nation today.
