For 58 1/2 years of my life, I was a practicing Christian: I read the Bible (more than once from cover to cover), did Bible studies, attended church regularly, and consider myself quite knowledgeable of the book and its message. Last year, a dilemma presented itself to me, completely unrelated — I thought at the time — to my faith.

Like many Americans, I have watched as those who support Donald Trump continue to believe him in spite of a mountain of evidence that he lies ALL THE TIME. It hit me that no matter what evidence you showed these people, they would not change their minds about Trump: they were dead-set in their support of him and refused to hear anything else.

And then it dawned on me: they would NOT CHANGE THEIR MINDS. And I realized that no matter of evidence, no number of January 6th hearings, no audio tapes of him lying could change the minds of his followers. Some might suggest that meant his followers had been brain-washed, but in researching the matter, what I discovered was that it was not a recent brain-washing but a lifelong effort by people to convince us of certain things: it was their core beliefs.

I spent all last Summer investigating how Americans have come to believe things which are patently false, including the things that Donald Trump would say…
