I have just spent three wonderful days in Annecy. Nestled in the Haute-Savoie region of southeastern France, Annecy is a picturesque town that enchants visitors with its stunning alpine backdrop, crystal-clear lake, and charming medieval architecture. Often referred to as the “Venice of the Alps” due to its intricate canal system, Annecy offers a delightful blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re drawn to its outdoor adventures, culinary delights, or historical landmarks, Annecy promises an unforgettable travel experience.

A Glimpse into Annecy’s History

Annecy’s history dates back to Roman times when it was known as Boutae. However, it wasn’t until the 12th century that Annecy flourished, largely due to its strategic location between Italy, Switzerland, and France. The Counts of Geneva made Annecy their home, and the town prospered as a center of trade and politics.

In the 15th century, Annecy became the capital of the County of Geneva. It played a crucial role during the Protestant Reformation, serving as a refuge for Catholics fleeing religious persecution.
