This is one of my finds of the year. It is a short but windy six-mile drive from where I am staying in Pylos. Nestled along Greece’s picturesque coastline, Methoni beckons travelers with its rich history, breathtaking scenery, and captivating culture. At its heart lies the formidable Methoni Castle, a magnificent fortress that has stood the test of time. Let’s embark on a journey to explore the wonders of Methoni Castle and the treasures that await beyond its walls.

History

The Methoni Castle, built during Venetian rule in the 13th century, stands as a testament to Methoni’s strategic importance in guarding the entrance to the Ionian Sea. Its construction was part of a broader effort by the Venetians to fortify key maritime points along the coastlines of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean.

Strategically positioned on a peninsula extending into the sea, the Methoni Castle controlled access to the harbor and served as a formidable defensive stronghold. Its massive walls, towers, and bastions were designed to withstand sieges and repel invaders, making it a crucial bastion of Venetian power in the region.
