On The White Cliffs of Dover Stands One of England’s Most Iconic Castles

I often visit Dover, in the historic county of Kent, as I spend my summers golfing in nearby Sandwich. In addition, I use the busy ferry port frequently on the 90-minute crossing to Calais, France. So, after looking up at it for years from the boat as I left the UK last year, I finally stopped and visited the castle with a couple of American friends, who were blown away. This castle has it all good looks, a great location, lots of amazing history, and plenty of secrets. They could have filmed Game of Thrones here without any set changes.

Dover Castle is a medieval castle and is one of England’s most iconic and historic landmarks. The castle is situated on top of the famous White Cliffs of Dover, from which you can see France, and has been an important defensive site for over 2,000 years. The cliffs stretch for over eight miles and reach heights of up to 350 feet. They are formed from layers of compacted chalk, composed mainly of the fossilized remains of tiny marine organisms.
