Like most startups, our early days at Legible were spent deep in research. Before any designs were penned, before a line of code or copy was written, we were putting together the foundation of our platform.

If you’ve been a part of a startup, you already know that having a good idea is not enough. Just like writing a book, the idea is just the seed of a beautiful story. Good ideas get us thinking, dreaming, sometimes even scheming to get going on building that story. The next bit involves leg work, focusing on articulation of goals, support networks, determining market share and audience reach.

Our mission statement came first — At Legible, we aim to empower and connect authors and readers through open access to our global reading and publishing platform. Once we knew what we wanted to do, we had to determine who we would most like to invite to share Legible with our authors and publishers. Who would be our readers?

A savvy investor asked us early on what share of the market we wanted to reach with Legible. We said, “all of it.” This was, perhaps, a bold and unexpected statement for him to hear. We drilled down the boring breakdown for him after that and showed him the data we had compiled, the research we’d done, the wisdom that years of experience in the areas of digital reading, publishing and web design we had among our team had revealed.

We had done our homework.

What our research tells us is that every reader is important. The reader who doesn’t have a credit card but still wants to read something online. The reader who loves their Kindle device but still wants to read beautifully crafted or media-rich books. The reader who doesn’t want to invest in an expensive additional device to be able to access books. The reader who values an independent spirit and wants to support indie authors, publishers, bookstores, and ebook platforms. The reader who wants easy access because jumping through hoops to buy and then read her ebook wastes her precious reading time. The reader who values accessibility features so they can enjoy the online reading experience as anyone else might. The reader who wants to be able to toggle between audiobook and ebook in real-time. The reader who is new to digital books. The reader who is new to reading. The reader who has been reading for decades. The reader who loves to read. The reader who is learning to love to read.

So yes, we welcome everyone. Legible is built for every reader, because every reader is important.

Launching soon! We can’t wait to welcome you.
