1 Second Memories

If you could relive 50 years of your life in just 5 hours, would you? With the app 1 Second Everyday, you can.

1 Second Everyday is exactly as it sounds. It’s a video diary that stores one-second videos and saves them as memories. These clips are put together into a video package that tracks each day and allows people to reminisce about their past by triggering memories.

A summer filled with one-second memories adds up to a 2-minute video, and a decade adds up to an hour-long video. I mean, just imagine watching a second from every day of your life. Plus, the fact that a person only needs a smartphone to access this digital diary is a testament to the high accessibility and efficiency of the app. After all, most people do have an HD video camera (a.k.a a smartphone) in their pockets at all times nowadays.

It works by taking any video — whether recorded in the app itself or from your camera roll — and pulling a specific second from that video, inserting it for the given day.

Once the project is finished, whether it be for a summer, a quarantine period, a year, or for decades, they can be saved and shared on any social media platform. However, depending on the platform, the final video may have to be split into segments. Some of my favorite videos I have seen on Instagram typically use music to set a particular mood.

Many people at the start of each summer, including myself, begin one of these projects to create a movie-like video. It summarizes the good times, and maybe even the bad. But the main goal of 1 Second Everyday is to give people the chance to reminisce in a simple and easy way. We have little recollection of so many things in life, and recording just a second of each day can give people the opportunity to recall past events in their life.

1 Second Everyday creates a desire to go out into the world and make the most of everyday life. I find that when I begin, I am competing with past days to capture a moment more epic than the last. If you make each day count, each day will be worth remembering. Doing something fun, creative or adventurous every day creates a more exciting and enticing project — not only for the creator but for all viewers on social media.

This app has recently won a couple of Webby Awards for Best Use of Mobile Camera.

Capturing memories matters. You may be saying to yourself, “Who cares that my Mom turned 50 or my cousin got married?” But the truth is, we care about all of the ceremonies of birth and birthdays, marriages and anniversaries, holidays, and new houses because they create a timeline of our lives filled with faces and places that we love.
