New Twitter, New Me

This week, I took a look at my analytics on Twitter.

This is the first time I have made a social media account that isn’t purely about sharing pictures and silly things about my life. I also found that since there is a big news headline every day these days, Twitter is the best media platform to share your thoughts and educate yourself because everyone is so candid.

You can find tons of different views and news sources on Twitter that don’t follow one political party’s views. It gives celebrities, activists and young adults like me a place to share our thoughts and potentially get recognized for it.

Looking deeper into my analytics, I saw that the posts where I added a link had more popularity than other posts where I just typed out a thought. People are more prone to clicking on links to other people’s posts when you personally comment with thoughts on the link, or give a summary of the article or photo.

For example, a quote-retweet about the Blackout on social media that encouraged people not to use the hashtag “Black Lives Matter” got more attention. This is because I linked another Twitter user and wrote my own opinion. I think this post got attention because it was also informational and touching on something relevant that day.

Another post that got a lot of recognition was a post that included pictures. These, specifically, were art graphics speaking on the Black Lives Matter movement. There was a beautiful design of George Floyd’s face, a quote about white privilege, different shades of skin holding hands in a fist, and a design saying “enough is enough.”

In this post, I also included some advice when attending protests. Again, this material is extremely prevalent for the times right now. I also included a recommendation for where to donate money if you cannot attend a protest but still want to participate.

This definitely got more attention because of the amount of information loaded in the post, as well as the graphics that were added. People love having visuals to look at and I find myself liking and retweeting posts that involve pictures. I think that I could have posted more photos in different posts to continue to attract a following.

In the future, I am definitely going to continue to post my thoughts on politics and comment on the news because I feel like in this day and age, silence means ignorance. And I have lot to say on the matter.

Also, since I love theater, I want to continue to post about different concerts being held or news on shows that are announced that resonate with me — perhaps theater’s comment on social justice or benefit events to help different causes.
