IDAHOBIT Day
Today observes the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. This year, the worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversity is focusing on the role of ‘Families’ within the LGBT+ community. In particular, is raising awareness around the families’ role in enhancing the well-being of the LGBT+ members and the respect of the rights of these families, among others.
About IDAHOBIT
The date May 17 was chosen to commemorate the date when the World Health Organisation no longer considered homosexuality as a diagnosis in 1990. Since the establishment of this day, in 2005, each year has had a different theme and Transphobia and Biphobia have been added to the campaign to make a more inclusive celebration. Nowadays, this day constitutes an annual landmark to raise awareness around LGBT+ related issues and has become one of the most important days on the calendar. Why do we need it?
As the IDAHO Committee highlights, there is a great need to defend the LGBT+ rights: criminalisation, stigmatisation, repression, restriction of freedom of expression and violence in a large number of countries in the world are but just a few of the issues that this community faces.

As part of the themed months’ #40YearsOnYourSide campaign, this month the Leicester LGBT Centre is raising awareness around homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. Send a selfie or a photo with a sign and a slogan to show your support against LGBT+ phobia. Join us in the celebration of sexual and gender diversities and stand against any shape or form of discrimination!
