New Job Opportunity at the Centre: Project Officer — Adult Transgender Project

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Project Officers to join Leicester Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Centre. The posts will support and provide for inclusion for adult transgender, non-binary and gender variant people*, transitioning in later life. You will also be supporting their families. This project is a follow-on project from our Young Transgender project (supported by BBC Children in Need), set up two years ago to give support to young people (ages 0–18), who are transitioning, and their families. These posts are funded by Big Lottery Fund Reaching Communities.

The Project Officers will report to the Project Manager and will be responsible for the initial point of contact on issues relating to being transgender and gender variant and general duties and tasks.

Leicester Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Centre is a voluntary organisation established to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The Centre exists to provide a safe social and support space, deliver high-quality professional services that are responsive to the needs of the local community and challenge the inequality created by society.

In return, we offer a competitive salary of £18,919 per year, 35 hours per week, including regular evening and occasional weekend work. Benefits include 26 days holiday plus bank holidays, pro rata.

* Trans(gender) is an umbrella term that includes many different identities to include all variations which differ from cisgender. The terms we have used (transgender, non-binary and gender variant) are meant to be representative of the trans(gender) communities and not exhaustive.

Responsibilities and Duties

Main Responsibilities will include:

· To run/facilitate social and peer support group sessions

· To liaise with partner agencies to deliver the projects’ aims

· To recruit and train volunteers

· To maintain accurate, concise, up-to-date and timely records of discussions that take place between the Project Officer and service user, including development of social media and signposting to appropriate organisations

· To keep knowledge up-to-date on issues of importance and specific interests to the Centre and transgender, non-binary and gender variant communities

· To act as an advocate for adult transgender, non-binary and gender variant people

· To develop and deliver accredited training on issues relating to transgender, non-binary and gender variant people

· To provide service users with individual professional guidance and information on knowledge and interests as they pertain to and affirm their individual identities as transgender, non-binary and gender variant people, including to facilitate outreach advice and support sessions

· To actively talk and listen to service users by using a person-centred approach

· To facilitate access to one to one counselling

· To develop and support a family support group

· To develop content for a transgender-specific webpage

· To facilitate delivery of speech therapy interventions

· To work with the direction of the Project Manager to deliver all other milestones and objectives of the project, including a year 1 to 3 project plan

· To liaise on project evaluation with an external evaluator

· To take part in a rota of office cover with other staff members

Qualifications and Skills

The successful Project Officer will have the following skills and experience:

· Knowledge of and experience of the issues affecting transgender, non-binary and gender variant people

· Ability to work without close supervision

· Ability to motivate and work as part of a team

· Ability to build effective working relationships with other organisations to deliver service improvements

· Ability to maintain accurate, concise and up to date and timely records of service user engagement

· Outstanding organisation skills, with experience of managing work to deadlines

· Understanding of excellent customer service

· Excellent communication and presentational skills

· Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights with specific emphasis on transgender issues and human sexuality

· Demonstrate awareness of current safeguarding procedures
