Addison Rae’s Transfer into the Music Industry with ‘Obsessed’

Hearing celebrities who we originally associate with one field jump into another certainly isn’t a new thing, but seemingly more like an ongoing, long-lasting trend. From Wes Nelson, who initially appeared on Love Island, making his own music debut with “See Nobody”, to Johnny Depp placing more focus on his band, a lot of areas of are being covered. And recently, Addison Rae has made her own switch onto the musical side of things with her first single “Obsessed”.

Now, when you think of the name ‘Addison Rae’ the things that will most likely come to mind include TikTok, dancing, and her friendship with the D’Amelio sisters, but like a wave of young Tiktokkers, she’s decided to make use of her current fame and status to jumpstart a musical career.

Before we get into the actual nitpicking of the song, one thing many people are upset about is the fact that people like Addison are allowed to not pay their dues within the music industry. Truly, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering our generation is used to instant things: box sets instead of waiting for episodes to be released gradually, instant food & ready-made meals, and tapping a button to send messages to friends and family rather than physically posting mail.

For example, a meme was made with side-by-side images of thumbnails of the YouTube Music Videos of ‘Treat People with Kindness’ by Harry Styles, compared to that of ‘Be Happy’ by Dixie D’Amelio, Harry Styles, whilst he isn’t exempt from Gen Z, he has much talent + more than a decade in music under his belt, and has certainly paid his dues. On the other hand, Dixie took what some may say was the ‘shortcut route’ to musical fame. And these actions may be seen mirrored within Styles’ journey into acting. But D’Amelio already has a song with Liam Payne, former bandmate of Harry Styles, and collabs with quite a few other prominent musicians. Despite this, Dixie’s ‘Be Happy’ Music Video has many more views than Harry’s song. Though, both songs do convey important messages.

And many may feel that those who do take the ‘scenic route; now have less opportunities due to short-cut takers.

Now, for ‘Obsessed’. To begin with, this song reminds me a lot of ‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber. As of now, I believe Justin is a great singer, with great vocals, great studio recordings and live performances alike, and generally I love his music, and I think he has matured in large lengths musically as well as generally, but back in his ‘Baby’ days, well, sure, any chorus repeating the words “Baby” is sure to be catchy, but simply put, it wasn’t exactly a good song. There was no real message, the lyrics were well-written maybe for a 13-year-old heartthrob to sing, but not for a properly professional musician and generally it deserved its position as one of the most disliked YT Videos ever.

“Obsessed” also has a relatively catchy tune and chorus, Addison’s voice seems to be heavily auto-tuned, and it seems like a song aimed at the market of bubblegum-pop lovers inc. young kids. Even with ‘Be Happy’ there was a real message behind it, but not hard to find, with Dixie talking about her mental-health struggles, but here, well let’s just day that if this was the only song Martians could depict humanity from, we’d all be, to them, narcissists.

Ultimately, maybe once Addison finds her own voice, writes meaningful lyrics, holds a bit more experience and cuts down on the auto-tune, then her music would be worth listening to.
