Please welcome Mura, the AI platform revolutionizing commercial field service operations
Meet Mura, the latest addition to Lerer Hippeau’s portfolio.
HQ: New York
Founder: Ryan Smith, Claire DeRoberts, James Mackey
The problem: Field services, from HVAC and plumbing, to electrical break-fix work and commercial kitchen repair, are what keep American businesses running. Despite how sophisticated these operations have become, they continue to be plagued by back-office inefficiencies in AR and AP, like manual data entry and billing bottlenecks. As of yet, the advancements in artificial intelligence have not been applied to this highly fragmented industry. At a time when private equity firms are turning to non-traditional industries like HVAC for investment, there is a real need to modernize the infrastructure used by service operators and enable more efficient payment processing.
Mura’s solution: Mura’s AI-powered platform integrates with existing field service management systems in order to automate order-to-cash processes, enabling commercial HVAC and field service providers to dramatically reduce overhead and secure payment faster. Mura’s approach is based on a “dark software” concept that attaches to and works invisibly within existing systems. As a result, field service companies avoid the messy and disruptive process of platform migration and can achieve significant time savings immediately, allowing them to grow service call volume and get paid faster, without having to add back-office headcount.
Origin story: Ryan and Claire previously started LeafLink, the B2B cannabis marketplace that now handles ~80% of all wholesale cannabis orders in the U.S. (and an early LH portfolio company). Mura represents the team’s strategic shift to applying AI to modernize essential infrastructure in commercial field service operations. The two partnered with James Mackey, Mura’s technical co-founder, who brings his experience in AI and platform integrations from Attentive, a pioneer in AI marketing. The three have joined their range of expertise to propel the commercial field service industry into the age of AI and automation.
Why we’re betting on it: The commercial field service market represents a significant opportunity for innovation through the application of AI. What makes Mura compelling is their approach to making AI work invisibly within existing workflows. Mura’s “dark software” integrates seamlessly into established operational processes, automating manual data entry, unclogging billing bottlenecks, and ultimately accelerating cash flow. Moreover, the company has already gained traction among customers. Since launching in October 2024, Mura has built an impressive roster of commercial field service companies who are seeing promising results.
Our take: We first met Ryan and Claire when they were building LeafLink in 2017, and wrote their first institutional checks there (as well as participating in subsequent rounds). Ryan and Claire are proven operators with a significant track record of building industry-defining platforms. We couldn’t be more excited to back them again as they tackle this new challenge and work to transform commercial field services in the U.S.
