The problem: Since the Farm Bill legalized hemp back in 2018, the number of CBD brands has grown dramatically. But greater access to Cannabidiol-based body products and ingestibles has not necessarily correlated with increased transparency around CBD purity or added ingredients. With a natural extract such as CBD, you’d assume that CBD-based consumer packaged goods on the whole would be natural, too. But with extra ingredients such as added sugar and artificial flavorings, that’s not always the case.
Sweet Reason’s solution: Sweet Reason is a CBD-infused sparkling water company that seeks to offer consumers a best-in-class, natural CBD beverage. Sweet Reason uses a highly bioavailable CBD that’s CO2-extracted from organic Colorado hemp. And the five-calories beverage contains no sugar, sweeteners, sodium, carbohydrates or artificial ingredients.
Origin story: Sweet Reason founder Hilary McCain has spent her career focused on the food and beverage space, working in strategy roles at both Chobani and Maple Leaf Foods. She developed her expertise in business-building from her time at Boston Consulting Group and Harvard Business School. Along the way, she grew a strong network of food, beverage and cannabis advisors that has helped fuel Sweet Reason’s ideation and development.
Why we’re betting on it: In a space with an increasing number of new brands, it’s more important than ever to bet on the founder. Hilary combines deep domain expertise in beverage and distribution, a passion for health and wellness as well as thoughtful dedication in creating the best beverage on the market. From the quality of taste, the careful formulations and ingredient list, down to the size of the bubbles, her attention to detail was apparent to us from the first sip. We believe that Hilary will build Sweet Reason into a best-in-class brand in the beverage space and that she’ll continue to create products customers love.
Our take: We’ve seen a surge in new entrants the CBD beverage category, and, due to that, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. When we think about the future of the CBD space, we’re betting on a brand and team that stands behind superior quality and brand resonances. This was our thinking when we backed prima and the same is true for Sweet Reason. We believe the winner in this category will have to do more than just visually stand out on shelves. It must have a brand aligned with the core benefits of hemp-CBD. For us, that’s Sweet Reason.
