About the Assistant Controller position:
We are seeking a detail-oriented, proactive Assistant Controller to join Lerer Hippeau. In this role, you will report directly to the CFO and be responsible for overseeing the financial operations and reporting across our funds, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in all deliverables. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing quarterly and annual financial statements, tax filings, K-1s, and compliance-related reporting in line with the Funds’ partnership agreements.
- Overseeing the Funds’ books and records, including partner allocations and valuation processes.
- Leading the annual audit and tax preparation process.
- Administering capital calls, distributions, and cash management for the funds and management company.
- Maintaining and leveraging our internal database (Standard Metrics) for tracking portfolio company financials, KPIs, and valuations.
- Synthesizing financial data from portfolio companies and producing analysis for both internal strategy and external reporting.
- Supporting investor reporting, LP communications, and fundraising efforts — including preparation of supplemental reports and participation in annual meetings.
- Coordinating with internal teams and external partners (including deal teams, counsel, auditors, tax advisors, and administrators) to ensure accurate and efficient transaction structuring and reporting.
- Monitoring and maintaining compliance with key partnership agreement provisions, developing internal tools and dashboards as needed.
- Providing meaningful financial insights and feedback to the firm’s principals and completing special projects as needed.
About you:
You’re a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, detail-driven environment and brings both analytical rigor and strong communication skills to the table. We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a solid foundation in fund accounting, financial reporting, and partnership structures.
- Has direct experience in venture capital fund operations (required).
- Is highly organized, with a strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple workflows and deadlines.
- Has exceptional analytical skills and can interpret complex financial data to drive insights.
- Is comfortable interacting with investors and external stakeholders in a professional, thoughtful manner.
- Is proactive, with a problem-solving mindset and the ability to work independently.
- Has experience working with fund administration systems and tools (e.g., Standard Metrics or similar).
- Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Is collaborative and comfortable working cross-functionally across teams.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA required)
- 3–7+ years of relevant experience, including prior experience in a senior finance role in a venture capital firm (preferred)
- Strong knowledge of fund accounting, GAAP, and partnership structures
- Proficiency with financial software and tools, including Excel and portfolio tracking platforms
- Demonstrated ability to manage audits, tax processes, and financial reporting cycles
- Experience interacting with LPs and supporting investor relations efforts
Through the internal and market data, Lerer Hippeau has collected, we expect the base salary range for this position to be between $150,000 — $200,000 per year, plus a competitive equity package. Your actual compensation will be determined based on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
