The reality is that Donald Trump was elected by Republican voters — over 90% of the base voted for him. He was able to get more African-American, Hispanic, and female votes than the last Republican candidate for president (Romney). The truth is hard to accept, but it doesn’t make it any less true. There wasn’t some racist whitelash that brought Trump into power — the longer it takes for the Democrats to realize that the longer you’ll be out of power.
