The polls were all wrong. Why do we do them?

The media paid pollsters hundreds of millions of dollars this year to fabricate stories predicting who was going to win the election and then they “reported” the results of these polls as if they are actual news. Most news organizations refuse to pay for stories — it is considered unprofessional — but they don’t have a problem to pay others to invent stories. What if we made it illegal for a news organization to pay someone to conduct a poll? They’re officially useless and perhaps harmful to political discourse.
