Which tape matters most?
Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have been caught on tape saying things they’d never say in public — will it matter?
Two things are true. First, more often than not defense attorneys represent clients who are guilty of heinous crimes. Second, billionaires and television stars have women throwing themselves at them left and right.
The first tape, that has been around for years, is of Hillary Clinton joking about one of her first cases after law school. She represented a man who she acknowledges raped a 12-year-old girl. On the tape you can hear Hillary laughing and joking about how she got the rapist off with time served (he spent two months in jail before going to trial). It was her duty as a defense attorney to get the rapist off — and she was successful — but the stomachs of most Americans turn inside out when they listen to her laughing and joking about the case. The 12-year-old girl isn’t laughing — a grown woman today she was at the debate last night and has been very vocal about her disdain for Hillary Clinton suggesting,
‘I don’t think [Clinton’s] for women or girls. I think she’s lying, I think she said anything she can to get in the campaign and win. If she was [an advocate for women and children], she wouldn’t have done that to me at 12 years old.’
Listen for yourself. The fact checking websites have ruled Trump’s claim that Hillary laughed about getting the child rapist off as “false”. But you decide.
The second tape (one of many I suspect that are coming in the next few weeks) was of Donald Trump on the set of soap opera having a private conversation with another man. The two of them were obviously speaking in hyperbole about women. You can listen for yourself — there is really no way to defend what they said — in a public context it is offensive.
So which tape matters more? Which tape tells us more about the candidate? You get to decide on November 3rd.
