Many types of cancer are preventable and incidences of cancer can be lowered by modifying risks, whether those are lifestyle, commercial, or environmental choices. Less Cancer does the work of bringing awareness for ways we can prevent cancer or recurrence and promote health to the forefront of the cancer conversation.

For a number of years, the cancer conversation has revolved around cancer diagnosing, treating, awareness of existing, and curing. Less Cancer promotes a paradigm shift from cancer awareness and treatment to prevention and risk reduction to reduce cancer incidences, recurrence, and impact. Less Cancer, particularly through National Cancer Prevention Day, United States Cancer Prevention Caucus, and National Cancer Prevention Workshop, has provided a platform for individuals, organizations, communities, hospitals, healthcare providers, legislators, and researchers to come together for awareness and information regarding lifestyle changes individuals and communities can take to prevent cancer as well as, environmental, commercial, and regulatory approaches which address carcinogenic risks on a national and global scale. Less Cancer also seeks to narrow the disparities and inequities in cancer exposures, diagnoses, access to care, and treatment experienced by marginalized populations.

The main fundraiser to support their work is a bike ride across Michigan called Split the Mitt Ride.

This year people can also register as Virtual Riders to ride anywhere (even one’s bike in her family room), any distance, and at any time of their choosing.

“But I don’t have a bike. I do go to the gym though.” Great! They have bikes.

“But I don’t have access to a bike at all.” No problem. If you have a floor, you can do the old exercise bicycle in the air.

“I really prefer __________ (running, yoga, Pickleball, etc.)” No problem! Any type of movement and donation is accepted.

If you sign up to ride, share a comment here or on Less Cancer’s Facebook Event page.

Register for Sunday’s ride/run/walk/etc here. Can’t make it this weekend? You can make a donation on this link too or if you’re really feeling nice, consider donating to my ride here.
