How to Trade Your Stress Habit for Clarity

I finally retired she told me. And I feel so strange. Like a fish out of water. I am so used to feeling stressed all of the time and I don’t have anything to feel stress about. I actually miss it. I mean a little bit of stress is a good thing, don’t you think? Makes you feel like you have a sense of purpose, a level of productivity.

“I can hear that you have a habit of feeling stress. Doesn’t mean, in my book at least, that stress is a good thing. It has a way of tarnishing your clarity. And wouldn’t you rather have clarity in each moment to take the most productive course? Without any thoughts of a potential, made-up future, cluttering your thinking?”

So, what is stress? Stress is a thought-created emotion, just like every emotion. And even if you don’t see the thought that is creating your emotion, I promise you that it is there. Just under your level of conscious thought, just under the ticker tape of thoughts that you are aware of.

Most stress is created from future-based thoughts. Imagining what the future might bring with a sense of fear that if we don’t act in a certain way we won’t like the outcome.
