The Best Way Out of a Cranky Mood
Are you ever in a bad mood? Yes? What about anxious or fearful?
I am about to tell you something about a bad mood that may not make sense at first. But stick with me. There is something profound to see here…
I went to visit my mom this past weekend. She lives in Florida and the weather was beautiful. On my last morning there I went to take a swim in the pool before I left for the airport and while I was getting into the pool a wave of nervous came over me.
Well, it turns out that most of us humans have a habit. When we feel a feeling in our body, an emotion that we don’t like, our immediate inclination is to go looking outside of us for the cause of that uncomfortable feeling. Me too.
So, what did I do in that moment? I asked myself, what is causing this feeling of anxiety?
Pause here and look at what just happened. It is fascinating. I felt an emotion and then went looking for what caused it.
We, so often, live in the oh so innocent illusion that outside influences are causing our emotions. We assume that our emotion starts with an event. Event → Emotion
That is not what happened to me, and I noticed. I had the emotion and then went looking for a cause. What is that all about?
