Italian philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564, in Pisa, Italy. His family shifted to Florence a few years later and continued to live there for generations. Galileo initially studied medicine but became obsessed with mathematics and philosophy while still at university.

He is still famous for his work in the fields of astronomy and the science of motion, and for his contribution to the development of the scientific method. One of his most important discoveries included the ones he made with the telescope; these discoveries led to the widespread acceptance of the Copernican heliocentric system.

Even centuries after his death, Galileo’s innovations remain just as important, if not more. They have laid the foundation for countless discoveries in the natural sciences, thus earning him a place as one of the most influential scientists of all time. Even though his life and accomplishments have been studied extensively over the past few years, there are some facts about him that most people may not be so familiar with.
