Ancient Rome arose from a small town located along Italy’s Tiber River, and grew into an empire that occupied much of continental Europe, Britain, and a large part of Western Asia, the Mediterranean Islands, and northern Africa. After 450 years as a republic, Rome became an empire under its first emperor, Augustus Caesar. Its golden age of peace and prosperity came to an end by 5 A.D.

During this entire period, the Roman civilization underwent several changes, many of which significantly contributed to developments that occurred in the world much later.

1. Rome Was Founded in 753 B.C. by Romulus, Who Named the City After Himself.

Rome came into existence in 753 B.C. and was founded by its first king, King Romulus. The traditional date for the founding of the city was set by scholars and historians who worked backwards from their own period. Other historians came across records of kings of Rome before the last one of them (Tarquin the Proud) was removed and the Roman Republic came into existence in 510 B.C.
