In the early 1900s Europe, it was quite a trend to have mounted animals as a big part of the overall décor of a home. Affluent English families loved to flaunt their exotic animal mounts. This fad resulted in the rampant killing of thousands of wild animals across Europe and Africa.
2. A young girl pictured riding an alligator; 1906
This startling picture was captured at the now-defunct California Aligator Farm in Lincoln Heights. This farm was heavily advertised as a family leisure spot where visitors could play with alligators, let their pets interact with the alligators, and even dine amidst these beasts! The park finally shut down in 1984, owing to scaling losses and drop-in visitors.
