Before setting out for a drive up US Route 101, I was convinced that we would see a max of 20 unique state license plates. By the time we returned home on day two of our trip, we tallied 40 states on our clipboard — wildly exceeding my expectations.

The small strip of highway from Los Angeles to Morro Bay certainly does not represent the driving population of the United States.

Nonetheless, we got hits of dopamine each time we spotted a new state — highly recommended for you to try on your next road trip with friends and family.
