History is awesome. It’s a teacher, but also a warning sign. Above all, it’s full of surprises.

Sometimes new evidence changes our view of it. However, sometimes it contains facts which are known. It’s just that most people don’t know about them.

Below I give you five historical events that most people don’t know about. Do you? How many of these facts were you aware of?

1) Algeria used to be part of the European Community

Algeria is located in North Africa, bordered on the west by Morocco, and on the east by Tunisia and Libya. The official language is Arabic (and recently also Berber), and the majority of the population is Muslim.

Yet, until 1962 formally and 1976 informally it was a member of the European Community (the predecessor of the European Union). In fact, it was a founding member. In 1957, the Treaty of Rome was signed, establishing the European Communities.

Article 227 of that Treaty established who it should apply to. The second point of that article had an interesting text:
