1. Ark of the Covenant — The Holy Chest
The Hebrew Bible tells us that Moses had the Ark of the Covenant, the ornate, gold-plated chest made of wood which God designed himself. The chest guarded sacred relics, including the two stones which had the Ten Commandments. The Israelites spent more than 40 years in the wilderness carrying the Ark around with them. Eventually, they put it inside King Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem.
The Babylonians besieged Jerusalem in 607 BC and slaughtered more than one million, and the survivors went into exile. When they returned, the Ark was gone along with other valuable treasures. We don’t know whether the holy chest was destroyed by the Babylonian invaders or it was hidden somewhere before they came. To this day, treasure hunters and archaeologists from all over the world have been trying to locate the Ark of the Covenant, but no luck so far.
