The constant hot topic of hushed whispers and conspiracy theories, the Freemasons are always there in the shadows and have a hand in every pie. Their members include the progeny of the Founding Fathers, major politicians, and billionaire businessmen.

Who are the Freemasons? What do they stand for? Let’s try to shed some light on the evasive topic with these seven interesting things you may or may not know about them.

1. The oldest brotherhood in the world.

Freemasons are a fraternal organization, that is to say, only men can be its members. We can trace their origins back to the Middle Ages in Europe where they functioned as a guild of skilled “stonemasons”, hence the name freemasons. According to Margaret Jacob, professor of history at the University of California, Los Angeles, and author of Living the Enlightenment: Freemasonry and Politics in Eighteenth-Century Europe, the modern definition of Freemasons is,
