Born in Grantham, on October 13, 1925, Margaret Hilda Roberts Thatcher was the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She was the daughter of a local grocer and alderman. The point of me telling you this is that she started from absolutely nothing. Being a female back then without any strong political background, Margaret Thatcher became the leader of the Conservative Party in 1975. She got elected as Prime Minister in 1979.

The British parliament, cabinet, members of the government at that time were male-dominated but she remained strong, governed all those men, and got the respect she deserved. People called her the “Iron Lady”. She took the right steps in order to lead Britain towards economic recovery and the end of communism. Thatcher was re-elected for a second and a third term in 1983 and 1987 respectively. This made her Britain’s longest-serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century.

I’ve compiled a list of eight facts I found interesting about her life and her role as the Prime Minister while doing my research. Let me know what you think.

Before becoming a politician, she worked on developing soft-serve ice cream as a food scientist.
