July 29, 1981, saw the Royal Family at its pinnacle with the marriage of Prince Charles to Diana, subsequently the Princess of Wales. Around 750 million people in 74 countries watched it on TV. A public holiday was announced in Britain, where 28.4 million people tuned in to watch on the BBC and ITV (mainly on the BBC), and 600,000 people lined the streets of London.

However, Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, divorced in 1996 after being legally separated for four years. On December 9, 1992, Prime Minister John Major announced,

“From Buckingham Palace comes the sad news that Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, have decided to separate. There are no intentions for a divorce between the Royal Highnesses, and their respective constitutional roles will remain unchanged.”

Princess Diana apparently did not desire a divorce, which is why the phrase “no plans to divorce” is so important here. After the couple’s marriage began to fall apart, Prince Charles gave an interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, revealing he had been unfaithful to Diana. This conversation took place between the couple’s formal separation and divorce.
