When most of us think of Isaac Newton, we think of the story where an apple fell on his head while he was walking through an orchard and that caused him to start working on his law of universal gravitation.

In summary, he theorized that the same force which drove the apple to fall on his head also made the moon orbit the earth and the earth orbit the sun.

But what many people don’t know is that despite being a renowned physicist, Newton was an almost fanatically religious man who thought the bible held many scientific secrets. He also believed in alchemy and the philosopher’s stone, and he was frankly quite weird in general.

Here are nine things you probably didn’t know about him.

1. He threatened to set his parents on fire

As I said, Newton was very religious. So devout was he in fact that he wrote a lot of his sins in a notebook as a sort of penance. Historians marveled at this insight into what made him human — for example, how he stole sweets or lied to get out of trouble. But this notebook also revealed an even darker side few knew he had.
