A 25 billion dollar canal around the Bosporus: Canal Istanbul

Turkey’s plan to build a new canal parallel to the Bosporus could spell doom to the environment and the economy of Turkey.

Turkey is an indispensable country in geopolitics as it connects Europe and Asia. The city of Istanbul has been the hotspot of conflicts between the east and the west.

Most importantly, between Christianity and Islam. Under Ottoman rule, Istanbul’s importance increased many folds. Under the democratic Republic of Turkey, Istanbul has become the point of international and national conflict for a canal project which would cost Turkey a whopping 25 billion dollars. Why is the Turkish government so much when there is already a canal.

Modern-day Istanbul was called Constantinople under the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. It was the gateway between Asia and Europe and the intersection between two cultures.
