Did Captain E.J. Smith survive the Titanic? Some believe he did. There are claims that he may have survived the sinking after all. Witnesses have come forward to tell their accounts of seeing the mighty ship’s captain jumping into the ocean, presumably to board a lifeboat and survive. He’s even been seen on the streets of Baltimore following the tragedy!

Captain Edward John Smith is hailed as a hero, helping many board the scarce lifeboats as his vast and beautiful ship slowly sunk into the chilled North Atlantic Ocean. The captain always goes down with his ship, and Captain Smith is no exception to this rule.

Or is he?

His Valiant Efforts

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on the 14th of April, 1912, witnesses first see Captain E.J. Smith respond to the ship’s bridge after being notified of contact with the iceberg. His whereabouts are somewhat hazy after this encounter with the ship’s crew and most believe he died in his sleeping quarters, valiantly going down with the fateful vessel.

However, like so many other victims of the Titanic’s sinking, his body has never been found.
