In 1947, British India’s partition was a tedious process, but another process was equally tedious.

It was integrating princely states in British India under the Indian constitution. It was a high drama event, as many princely states lost their sovereignty, and some fought for an independent country. Let’s see some exciting tales on the princely states that fought for their independence.

The British East India Company (EIC), which took over most of India, had one policy. The EIC used its military power, crushed the local rulers, and caused a rift among the local rulers. After the 1857 Indian revolt (Great Mutiny), British India came under the direct control of the Crown (Her Majesty’s Government).

Under the Crown, Indian Maharajas enjoyed semi sovereignty until they paid their taxes. There were close to 527 princely states in British India. The Delhi Durbar, which happened in 1911 to declare George V as the King of India, re-established the Quid pro quo.

After Britain decided to leave India, the sovereign states faced a massive dilemma regarding their future.
