In legal terminology, bail refers to the refundable deposit that allows a defendant in a case to get out of jail until their court date is set. The deposit serves as collateral, which ensures that the defendant will attend their trial or any other set court proceeding.

While not all cases are provided with the option for bail, the amount of bail set varies; sometimes, it may be set extremely high, depending on the jurisdiction, the type of crime, and the degree to which the court believes the defendant to be a flight risk.

The bail amount for many high-profile cases was set at an unaffordably high number, one that seems almost unrealistic. The goal of setting amounts this high is to make it challenging for the defendant to secure bail, thus making it less likely for them to escape prison time until their court hearing.
