A battle is a furnace in which the mettle of man has been tested since time immemorial. The chaos and blood hammers on both parties in the conflict without mercy, leaving even the strongest and most brutish warriors lifeless on the ground, their blood painting the battlefield red.

It is said there is honor in fighting, that this baptism of fire purifies the soul if one is fighting for a righteous cause. But the corpses cannot speak of the valor and honor of battle, and the blood-soaked survivors have only hollow ringing in their ears and a vacant look in their eyes because the brutalities and the madness of battle leave them shaken to their core.

Some of them never recover from the horrors they see, guts and limbs flying akimbo in ferocious combat, and then the vultures picking on the dead after all is said and done. Here are the five bloodiest battles in the history of mankind, based on the metric of the numbers of souls who lost their lives fighting them.
