1. The U-boat captured by a Bomber
On August 27, 1941, the German U-Boat U-570 surfaced off the coast of Iceland to face its worst nightmare.
From above, British pilot James Thompson immediately spotted the submarine. The U-Boat’s captain, Hans-Joachim Rahmlow, quickly ordered a crash dive, but it was too late.
Thompson’s Hudson Bomber released four depth charges, one of which struck the submarine hard, destroying its lighting system. Amidst the chaos, Rahmlow — inexperienced in U-boat warfare — panicked. Fearing a chlorine gas leak, he made a desperate decision to resurface again.
