When we think about British royalty, certain words come to mind, with luxury, wealth, tradition, and power being the obvious picks.

Yet the life of a monarch isn’t always pristine and shiny. Throughout British history, there have been plenty of grim moments for our kings and queens.

So, assuming you’re comfortable with a few nasty details, here are four unpleasant (and disgusting) facts about British monarchs.

1. Mary, Queen of Scots, Had a Grim Execution

Queen Elizabeth I of England was a Protestant, while her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, was a Roman Catholic. As such, many English Catholics wanted Mary to replace her cousin and rule over England and Scotland concurrently.

Hoping to quell a potential rebellion, Elizabeth imprisoned Mary for nineteen years. But in 1586, spies discovered a Catholic assassination scheme: the Babington Plot, named after ringleader Anthony Babington.
