1969 was the year of our first crewed moon landing — when Neil Armstrong discovered that its rich soil was great for planting flags.

Since that first monumental event, many more banners have been placed there, though none of them have retained their pretty stripes and stars due to radiation from the sun. They were actually all bleached white over the past 50 years (the last manned landing was in 1972).

Since then, there have been many highly-publicized weird theories about the moon. Some stories claim the landings were faked, the moon is actually a top-secret Nazi facility started by Hitler, or it’s hollow and has aliens living in it…

You can take your pick. All that being said, the purpose of this article is actually to explore the legends that past civilizations had about this orb. Here are five of the most interesting ones.
