How the ‘Karen’ Label Exposed Centuries of White Female Entitlement
When privilege goes viral, ‘Karens’ learn that being white isn’t always right.
When a former Port Authority commissioner in Tenafly, New Jersey raised hell with the police for pulling over her daughter, she was labelled a ‘Karen.’ The entire interaction was captured on a police car dash-cam and took social media by storm as people incredulously watched this middle aged white woman fight with the police officers who were well within their rights to stop the car.
The car in question was pulled over for an expired registration and non-moving violations, including having tinted windows. She, who is ironically named Caren Turner protested. She said she was worried that her daughter and her three friends would be left on the side of a busy highway after having their vehicle impounded and began to fight with the police. She said she didn’t understand why she had to take responsibility for four people and drive them all the way back.
Flashing her Port Authority badge she demanded to know what was going on even after the cops calmly told her that she does not have the right to intervene.
