The 19th century Victorian England is characterized by the supernatural element. In 1803, the town of Hammersmith, a few miles away from Buckingham Palace, was infamous for ghost sightings at Black Lion Lane and surrounding areas. Town people made routine visits to the police station to file complaints against a “tall specter covered in a white shroud”. Even though these dreadful experiences turned out to be a sham, horror is forever associated with the place now. Not due to other ghostly apparitions but because of how these tales transformed into one chilling story of a murder of a clueless bricklayer.

The Object of People’s Horror

In 1803, the people of Hammersmith complained about their frightful interaction with a tall ghostly figure with glassy eyes wearing a white robe. The sightings of the Hammersmith Ghost were common in the surrounding areas of Black Lion Lane. It was believed that it was the ghost of a man who had killed himself by slitting his throat in the previous year and was buried in the town’s cemetery.
